Apart from the two national parks, nature in Bonaire is under pressure. This is why strengthening flora and fauna and increasing the island’s biodiversity are key principles for the development of Estate Bolivia.
Nature comes first. Firstly, to live up to this idea, various studies have been conducted into the current state of flora and fauna. Independent experts have carefully mapped out areas with a high level of nature. The conclusion is that, in the past decennia, a lot of nature has been lost, but it’s not too late to return the Estate to its former glory.
“Over 80% of the Estate will become a nature sanctuary. Although these areas will remain accessible for responsible forms of recreation”
Green corridors
This will be taken into account when developing the plans. The Estate will be arranged to allow for a connection between the National Park Washington-Slagbaai and the mangrove forests at Lac. By creating green corridors between the houses, the restoration of both endangered native vegetation (tropical dry forest and meters high cacti, among others) and vulnerable species of animals (from Lora’s and other native bird species to bats and iguanas). Through these green corridors, their habitat becomes larger.
Nature sanctuaries
Over 80% of the Estate will become a nature sanctuary. Although these areas will remain accessible for responsible forms of recreation (hiking and cycling) and education, measures are taken to prevent any disturbances to nature – for instance, to the bat colonies that inhabit the caves. The nature damaged by goats and donkeys will be restored where needed. Even the sewers (waterways) will be repaired and enforced so rainwater can’t drag mud to the sea and damage the reef.
Nature experts
Needless to say, all plans will be tested to comply with the regulations concerning nature protection. Not only will nature experts remain involved in further development, (local) nature- and environmental organizations will also be consulted. The nature management of the Estate will be in the hands of a professional organization.
